The Summer Swell of Bears Activity
In the last 4 weeks, Coventry Bears coaches have been hard at work in the community, spreading the enjoyment of Rugby League and coaching over 500 individual youngsters.
Coaching students in curriculum time at the following Coventry schools: Bishop Ullathorne, President Kennedy, Barrs Hill, St Augustines, Riverbank Academy, Caludon Castle & Blue Coat, under the SKY TRY project, allowing students to enjoy Rugby League nationwide.
In addition to this Coventry Bears made a huge impact by coaching almost every student in a Social, Emotional and Mental Health specialist school in Solihull called Northern House. Jamahl Hunte and Mikey Russell, both first team players, have inspired the staff and students with their specifically tailored fun rugby league drills and games, right from year 2 (who had never embraced rugby before) through to the full team of passionate year 7, 8 and 9 boys!
The team of coaches have also hosted their first rugby league development day at the Butts Park Arena, attracting over 100 kids from across the region.
The event was to both raise awareness for the work the club does in the community and to bring together children off all ages to sample some high level coaching, physical activity and RL games. The event was a huge success and has seen an increase in the number of Juniors who are now registered with Coventry Bears.
All this is not withstanding the regular weekly activity that takes place throughout the summer at two locations in the city. The popular ‘Bears 5’s’ mixed adults session is still thriving at the Alan Higgs Centre every Monday at 8pm attracting over 40 participants regularly. This is now complemented by Junior training which is boys aged 10 – 17 on Mondays. Together with the Friday activity at the Xcel Leisure Centre where the Juniors are joined by a growing girls team the Cubs at 6pm, the coaches really are making Summer all about RL!
