President Kennedy v Coventry Bears U13's
On Sunday 11th June, President Kennedy School came along to the Butts Park Arena with a strong team of 15 year 8 boys to play a 13 a-side game against the Coventry Bears Under 13's team.
It was a first for many of the boys, playing on the main pitch that shortly after their game would be paced up and down by Coventry Bears professional Rugby League players and indeed their coaches, Jamahl Hunte, Kieran Sheratt, James Geurtjens and Mikey Russell.
Bears in the Community Coaches have been coaching at President Kennedy school this academic year and as lead coach James Geurtjens said, "The President Kennedy boys are a competitive bunch. They play well together and have size and power on their side, supported by an enthusiastic group of Teachers."
Both teams are coached by Bears in the Community Coaches, PK in curriculum time at school and Coventry Bears train on Mondays and Fridays at the Higgs and Xcel Centres. Both teams got pre-game pep talks by Coventry Bears Head Coach Tom Tsang and Assistant Coach Mark Sloan and had lots of encouragement from friends and family in the stands!
As the sun shone down and fans began arriving for the main game v Hemel Stags, President Kennedy boys took the early lead. PE Teacher Steve Garlick, from President Kennedy commented that whilst his team were bigger and perhaps more powerful, "the Coventry Bears U13 team possibly have more understanding of the skill and technique needed within the game play!"
The game was fast paced and very evenly competitive throughout, finally finishing 5 - 4 to Coventry Bears U13's. Both teams, together with friends and family then stayed to watch Coventry Bears gain it's second win of the season, with a very vocal crowd of 357 Rugby League supporters.
Thank you to all players, Teachers and friends and family who came to support the next generation of RL players from within Coventry!
