Coventry Bears Rugby League Club has taken a local baby hospice to their hearts.

The club based at Butts Park Arena have adopted Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice, situated in Ash Green, Coventry as one of their charities for the forthcoming season.

Debbie Watson, the Finance Director of the club, affectionately known as the Bears, visited the hospice a few months ago and was so taken with the wonderful care provided by the hospice, that she knew straight away that the Bears could offer their support and raise much needed funding.

The hospice which opened in 2011 provides palliative, respite and end of life care for children from 0 to 5 years of age, with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.

Debbie said “As soon as I walked in I could feel the warmth and hospitality. It is a wonderful place and full of laughter and joy. To be honest I really didn’t know what to expect, but it far outshone my expectations. The Staff do a fantastic job and you can see how happy the children are. We are determined to help Zoë’s Place stay open 24/7. We have so far raised £500 by organising a Ladies Day with the wives and girlfriends of the players, which included mini pamper sessions provided by local beauticians and other professionals and wine being served by topless Rugby Players!!!”

Jane McGaffney Community Fundraiser for Zoë’s Place commented: We are thrilled to be supported and partnered with the Coventry Bears. It was lovely to meet some of the players when they visited Zoë’s Place, along with their mascot ‘Big Blue’. You could see that they were very moved and humbled to be helping Zoë’s Place in such a positive way. I look forward to working with them in the future”.

“Indeed it’s vital we get support from local businesses and teams, you could say it’s a bear necessity joked Jane”. The Bears motto for their 2016 season is #inthistogether and this could not be more relevant than supporting a local charity that means so much to the city.
