Hunslet Preview

This Sunday the Bears travel to Hunslet who have had a very strong start to the season and currently sit top of the table in Betfred League One.

Tom Tsang commented ahead of Sunday’s match:

“The disruption of last week's late cancellation was disapointing as we wanted to get straight into another match after an encouraging performance versus Doncaster. So with the delay it means that we are really eager for Sunday to arrive and for us to get back on the field.

The only positive we can take from the un-planned week off, is that we picked up a few injuries versus Donny, and that extra time has meant the majority of those are now cleared up. The only big doubt is Ollie Purslow who is yet to pass his return to play protocol after his concussion.

This week we loaned two players from Championship side Dewsbury Rams - Jacob Thomas and Toby Richardson - who have trained really well and will be in consideration. And of course we have the dual registration with York and London Broncos to call on if needed.

Hunslet are deservedly unbeaten and top of the league, so playing them away will be a big challenge, but it is one we are keen to take on - we feel we are capable of getting a win which would take us towards the top of the table.

We beat Hunslet the last game of 2018, so they will probably be wanting to get their own back from that match, but both sides look very different this year and so it should be a cracking match.”

Bears take two on loan from Dewsbury Rams

We have taken the move to supplement our squad with two players from Championship side, Dewsbury Rams.

Bears Coach Tom Tsang said:

"After a few injuries picked up in our last two games, we felt it prudent to bring in some additional experienced players to our squad. The two will cover key positions and have already added value with their presence at training and have slotted in very well.

"Toby Richardson is a prop and can also play second row. He was a regular for Dewsbury in 2018, being very tough and is in great shape, meaning he can play for long minutes - a bonus now the interchanges have been reduced to 8 this year.

"Jacob Thomas is an Australian halfback who was a target of ours in the off-season but eventually signed for the Rams. We are happy to finally be able to see him in a Bears shirt. He is a skillful player and will help us in the absence of Nick Newman who picked up a 1 game ban from the match versus Keighley. "

Both players join us initially for 1 month but with a possibility of extension.

Toby Richardson said:

"Joining Coventry will benefit me massively if I can secure a spot in the team, so I can get some quality minutes under my belt.I would like to help the team get as many wins as possible whilst I’m with the Bears and try my best to impress whilst on the field.
I think I can bring a lot of talk and enthusiasm to the middles at Coventry and I will be bringing my best for the club."

Jacob Thomas added:

"I'm really looking forward getting started with the Bears. For me it's an opportunity to come in and be a part of a team that has started the season well and I hope to help them continue their winning ways and pushing for promotion.
Being new to the game in this country I'm looking forward to getting valuable minutes and showing what I can do.
As a halfback I want to help bring composure and direction to the team. This is my favourite thing to do and I will bring that enthusiasm to every play."

Scoreline flatters opponents as Bears knocked out of the Cup

The final score does not give justice to a very close and evenly matched contest where the teams were separated by just four points at half time and still just 6 points with ten minutes to go.

It was the Bears who kicked off under the Docasterfloodlights and they were soon on the offensive.

And it was Kadeem Williams who opened the scoring, making it 0-4 for the visitors after Kieran Sherratt had caused problems for the Dons’ defence with a well placed kick. The two points did not materialise, and this was to be a problem throughout the game.

Midway through the half, the Bears were over the line againe, this time courtesy of Elliot Hall, who was on the end of a flowing move involving Conroy, Barratt and Pearce –Paul.

The Dons were next to score and a successful conversion narrowed the gap to two points with the score at 6-8.

With just six minutes to go until half time, the Dons took the lead with their second try, and most importantly their second conversion, and the score was to remain at 12 -8 as the half time hooter sounded.

So, a good solid performance against probably the strongest side in this round of the competition, could the Bears keep this up and maybe grab a place for themselves in the next round?

Some nifty play following a free kick set KadeemWilliams over for his second try, but the lack of a successful conversion meant it was all square at 12-12, despite the Bears having scored more tries.

The Bears were determined to regain the lead and almost did so but Will Tully was held up over the line.

The tide then begin to turn as the Dons crossed over the line to take the lead.

The Bears conceded again, but were in no mood to give up as Dan Gover powered over the line to put the score at 22-16 with just ten minutes remaining..

But that proved to be as good ad it was to get as the Dons turned on the pressure and gained a further 16 points with a three try and two conversions blitz to send them into the next round of the Cup.

But looking at the positives this had been a strong Bears performance against a side emerging as the strongest in League 1, and they can look forward to next Sunday’s home game against Workington with confidence.

Tom Tsang commented post match:

“Despite the loss there are huge positives to take from our performance. We demanded a reaction from last week and the players really turned up and gave it everything.

The scoreline really doesn't show how close the game was - at 60 minutes it was still in the balance. Unfortunately, we picked up 6 injuries in the game, 4 of them inside the first 55 minutes, meaning we had no healthy players available and we weren't able to make any substitutions after this point. Had this been different I genuinely believe we could have got the result we wanted.

We gave debuts to Euan Tiernan and Callum Merrett who both showed they can play at this level. Plus there were a number of other standouts including Kadeem Williams in the centre who improves every week and Kieran Sherratt who has probably been our most consistent player in the first month of games.

Once again we have gone toe to toe with a heavyweight of League 1 and shown we are more than capable.

We will only get better from here”.
